ektokids will be experiencing a major overhaul in the next few weeks.

the concept of ektokids is being retooled and I'd like to notify all of you guys first.

We are still publishing the first issue as planned. A limited edition of 50 full color copies will be produced under the name: Cowboy Comics. Each member will recieve three copies and the rest will be archived and mailed to art directors as a catalog of student work. Your names and emails will be included.

The gallery is still happening but the content is in the air.

Why am I doing this?

I want to start off by saying you all made amazing, beautiful work. I had compliment after compliment about amazing you guys are. You all really came through and I'm going to make sure we all have something in our hands by October.

The thing is, this was my first attempt at anything like this. It was extremely successful, I believe, and I had fun seeing all the work roll in, but in the end, the concept I feel was a bit flawed on my end. I feel like the idea doesn't tread any new ground and is too safe.

I guess what I'm getting at is that the idea can be pushed about a thousand times further.

Does this mean the end for Ektokids? Not at all.
Ektokids is still the focus of my thesis and all of my energy and time. I just want to start with a clean slate and make a cohesive series of magazines and I feel the cowboy issue just won't fit.

What will become of Ektokids now? Whats going to be different?

The main ideas I want to focus on with the new Ektokids are:

Community:
I believe we should still be working as a collective and showing off ideas, but I'd like to have meetings and more collaborative efforts.

Anonymity:
I don't want anyone to know who we are. I know this might be a sore point because most of us are illustrators but I feel its important for the focus to be on the art and not on us. I want to be able to have someone like Dan Krall produce a piece and never admit to making it. I want it to feel more like a hive mind and i feel we can be freer to collaborate or throw in shitty drawings without having to worry about our public image.

More Diverse:
I'd like to include different artists that don't do illustrations, I want to contact people over the internet for submissions, I'd like to get Paul Pope to draw a piece of candycorn and publish it. I want the medium its distributed in to not always be comic form. I'd like to distribute CD issues or Floppy Disks. I'd like to hand a issue out to only a 2nd grade classroom in the suburbs. I want to get crazier.

there are other ideas of have, but for the most part, these are the major changes.

I'm sorry if anyone feels I'm letting them down. I've thought a long time about this though.

You are all still welcome to keep producing pieces and I really hope you all are still excited about this magazine. Nothing else has changed. I still want a community of artists working to produce some sweet shit for fun and exposing it to the public.

MICA ART MARKET

A group of faculty and staff have gotten together to organize a campus-wide holiday sale, which will combine existing sales that used to be organized separately by campus groups. By having a larger, inclusive sale, we hope to attract better publicity and attendance, and to create a festive holiday event in which many members of the MICA community will participate. The MICA ART MARKET will be a fun and welcoming way to show off the creativity and entrepreneurial energy of the MICA community. A group of staff and faculty got together to talk through the idea and to begin coordinating this exciting new event.

This first meeting involved some who have organized craft and artwork sales at MICA in the past. (July 12 meeting participants: Mary Walsh-Reynolds, Marian Savige, Megan Miller, Betty Enselein, Andrea Dixon, Michelle Longway, Rene Trevino, Monee Cottman, Anne South, Ellen Lupton, Anita Klein)

To keep the sale manageable logistically, the market will be divided into sections based on campus groups, rather than individuals. Campus groups include: Academic Departments, Student Organizations, and Faculty/Staff Consortia. Each group will have a point person who will make sure that group's sale is organized and set up and closed down each day during the event.

The MICA ART MARKET will not include the student Raw Art Sale. That event will continue in the Meyerhoff House as usual.

The MICA ART MARKET committee, chaired by Anita Klein, a member of the graphic design department, will work on publicity materials and general event details, consulting closely with the Communications Office, Events, and Exhibitions.

EVENT DATES: December 5 - 7, 3pm to 7pm; Dec. 8, 3pm to 5pm

PLACE: Leidy Atrium, Brown Center

NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, September 12th at 1:30 - 2:30pm in Brown 320 - everyone is welcome!

Overview sheets, contracts and merchandise forms for the sale will be available at the meeting.

PARTICIPATION: All students, faculty or staff member may participate. Students must form groups by department or as student organizations. Each group will be responsible for setting up their display and closing down each day. Groups will also take turns working the sales table.

FACULTY & STAFF: Will be considered one group. Individual participation forms must be submitted by October 26th.

STUDENT PARTICIPATION: Students may make a group from a department or from an existing student organization. Each student group must assign a point person to work with participants from that group. All student participation forms must be submitted by October 26th.

Students wishing to participate in the joint craft show should see their department point person-or volunteer to be the point person for their department. This would be a good class project for students.

PROMOTION

Ellen Lupton & Jennifer Phillips will coordinate with graphic design students, Communications and Illustration will oversee the design of press information, banners, flyers, etc. which will be given out to each department as well as being placed throughout the community. The event will be advertised in Juxtapositions.

I saw some of this guy, Jacob Magraw's work in Beautiful Decay and I really like his stuff. It's weird and the colors are awesome. And he works in gouache, which is pretty cool too. It's hard to find a lot of his work, and his website's pretty scarce, and I kind don't like his prints, but his paintings are really beautiful I think.

Oh, and for those of you who don't know about this process... it's a thing I started doing a couple of summers ago where I do ink washes and find drawings within it. Simple. There are many downsides to it, yes, but it's a nice way to let loose and just draw.

This is where you come in.

I've been coming up with ideas for a while about how to make the site. It's been tricky because I don't want it to look like I, David, made it, I want it to feel like everybody's website. So, in regards to that, here's my plan.

Ektokids.com is going to serve as a hub to link all of our art together and be super-community-web-two-point-oh-bloggy-social-networkytastic

when you load up the site, you will see two elements:
1.A random logo designed by an Ektokid at the top
2.And at the bottom will be an artist menu

The logos will be randomized every time someone visits the site

The menu will be a fighting game (cough, mortal kombat, cough, 1993) character select screen.

here's a visual aid as to what im talking about:

I apologize for the crudeness, i made these at work in MSPAINT making what some have already called "An outright disgusting use of Facebook."

There will be no flash, just simple javascript. When you scroll over an Ektokid, they will appear in in the left as an animated gif of them in a fighting position.

When you click on the kid, you will be brought to the next part of the Ektokids.com site, which will be a sort of stats page. this will show a small bio, work examples, blog link and a big ass picture of the kid with a custom name title.

Here's what I have in mind:

Alright, now I know the likelyhood of making 16 people put together a website, so I am going to do everything, I would just need a bio and logo from you guys. I could take most of the pictures myself.

Also, I know large photos take time to load, but these would all be wonderfully and purposefully low resolution to look like a shitty videogame.

My reasoning for this weird fighting game idea?

We will have alter-egos
its fun, thirteen-year-old-edgy much like the name "ektokids"
animated gifs of us in fighting positions
